40 Years of Relay For Life Impact
In May, 1985, Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, raising money to help the American Cancer Society with the nation’s biggest health concern: cancer. The extraordinary journey that began with Dr. Klatt’s vision sparked a global movement, uniting communities to fight back against cancer.
Over the decades, Relay For Life has transformed into a worldwide symbol of hope, remembrance, and collective determination. Currently, 1200 Relay events take place in over 35 countries and have raised $7 billion since 1985. Funds raised through Relay events directly support research, education, advocacy, and services for people with cancer and their families.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Relay. Its theme, Hope Through the Decades, honors the 40-year legacy of Relay For Life and the life-changing progress it has enabled as a global phenomenon and the world’s largest community fundraising event to end cancer for everyone.
Relay For Life of the Santa Clarita Valley invites the community to join this 40-Year celebration to honor lost loved ones, celebrate cancer survivors, and light the way for everyone impacted by a cancer diagnosis. The event will be held on May 3rd, at Central Park – 27150 Bouquet Canyon Road, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
This year, SCV Relay is offering the community a special opportunity to recognize loved ones. From April 1st to April 20th, any participant who raises $250 in new donations will be awarded a Tribute Sign that honors a loved one and will be displayed at the event. Participants who collect $250 on their personal fundraising dashboard will be contacted to submit a photo and name for the dedication.
Guests can also purchase luminaria bags for $10 and decorate them to honor all those who have been affected by cancer.
Join the fundraising movement in April and participate in Relay For Life’s 40 years of impact. When more people join, it means more support for those dealing with cancer today, for the next 40 years, and beyond.
