Addressing Mental Health: Challenges, Initiatives, and Health Disparities – Kaiser Permanente

by | Apr 29, 2025 | Medical

May highlights the importance of mental health, encouraging open conversations about its challenges. This month reminds us to prioritize mental well-being and seek support when needed.
Different communities face unique mental health challenges due to historical trauma, systemic issues, and socio-economic disparities. Stigma often leads to untreated conditions, including pressure to appear strong and self-reliant, resulting in reluctance to seek support. Mental health conditions and substance use disorder (SUD) often occur together, making addressing both essential. SUD stigma results in mistreatment and discrimination, impacting emotional and psychological well-being. Addressing SUD related to mental health helps reduce stigma and encourages individuals to seek help.
Intergenerational substance use is another issue, where substance misuse is passed down within families, leading to multi-generational substance misuse. There is a reluctance to discuss mental health issues due to stigma. Addressing stigmas requires community support, competent care, and systemic change to create a more inclusive and supportive environment.
The collaborative care model has shown success in treating anxiety and depression among diverse populations. It involves a team-based approach where primary care providers, mental health specialists, and other health care professionals work together to provide comprehensive care.
Saba Notghi, MD, chief of psychiatry with Kaiser Permanente in Sylmar, emphasizes, “Our goal is to provide sensitive care that meets the unique needs of different communities. By understanding their experiences, we can offer better support and treatment.”
Health disparities extend beyond mental health. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the disproportionate impact on various groups. Efforts within health care organizations aim to address these systemic issues. Dr. Notghi notes, “The pandemic shed light on the urgent need to address health disparities. We must work together to create sustainable solutions ensuring equitable care for all.”
Addressing these challenges requires community support, competent care, and systemic change. Efforts within health care organizations are paving the way for a more equitable health care system. Dr. Notghi concludes, “Together, we can create a future where everyone can access the care they deserve, regardless of their background.”
