On Taking Bad Advice – Law Offices of Richard A. Marcus
Last summer I bought these two incredible jet skis. Only problem is that I have no clue how to get them into the water. My friend and his daughter came over last week and we finally made it out to Ventura Harbor towing them in my Mercedes R350. They go into the water no problem. He parked the car and trailer, tossed the key in the center compartment of the ski and we are off.
About two and a half hours later, we find out the center compartment is not watertight and my fob is submerged in salt water. We get back and tie the skis to the dock. The key is totally fried. I can take the metal insert and get into the car but the key won’t turn and none of the buttons work. Best case I see is that I uber my friend home, he comes back with his SUV, get the ski’s out of the water and home and then I call AAA to get the R350 home. But we have one problem. No masks. There goes the Uber.
So I call another friend with lots of mechanical experience. He says all you need is some WD-40, which we don’t have. No problem. How about hand sanitizer? We got that. He tells me to liberally douse the entire fob with Purell and then take it apart and have it sit inside the car on the dashboard baking in the sun. After it dries, I should take the metal key insert out from the fob, insert it in the key hole and jiggle it fiercely while another person tries to start the car. Are you kidding me? Really? But after the purell bath and some time, I touch the remote and it actually lights up. A few minutes later, the doors then lock and unlock. Then, like in a bad horror movie, the stereo turns itself on and starts playing music. I take that as my sign.
I prod my friend to do a jiggle dance with the metal key. He is furiously moving the damn thing back and forth. I try to start the car and… the key turns and the car starts. Holy crap! We back the car in, get the skis and drive home. Moral of my story: What you think is really bad advice from a professional may actually be the best advice of all!
