Filtration Is Important
Koi pond filtration is super important for keeping the water clean and healthy for your koi fish. Most koi ponds have three main types of filtration: mechanical, biological, and sometimes Mechanical filtration is like a cleaning crew that removes all the yucky stuff from the water, like leaves, fish poop, and food that the koi don’t eat. They do this with pre-filters, skimmers, and settlement chambers. These things physically trap the particles, so they don’t get into the Biological filtration is like a team of tiny superheroes that break down the ammonia, which is a toxic waste product from the fish. These superheroes live in special media like porous stones or plastic beads in the filter. They turn the ammonia into nitrite and then into less harmful nitrate. This process is called nitrification, and it makes sure the water is balanced and healthy
The filtration system should do its job of cleaning and oxygenating the water every 1-2 hours. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to clean it out.
Remember, taking care of your koi pond’s filtration system is like giving your koi a spa day! It’ll keep them happy and healthy.
