How to Keep Your Pet Safer During Firework Season – No Place Like Home
Fireworks and other loud noises can definitely scare our furry friends. There are a few steps we can take to help them feel more secure.
Desensitization can help some pets or lessen fear. Play firework sounds by playing recordings at a low volume, slowly increasing it over time. Pair the sound with positive experiences, such as treats or playtime, to help them associate the noise with something positive.
Make sure your pet has up-to-date ID tags and is micro-chipped with current contact information. This will help if they get frightened and lost.
Pick a room in your home and fill it with their favorite toys, bed, treats. Close windows, doors, and curtains to help muffle the noise. Playing white noise, calming music, or using a fan can also help drown out the sound of fireworks. Thunder shirts may help some pets. These specially designed garments apply gentle pressure to your pet’s body, which can have a calming effect.
Your behavior can influence your pet’s reaction. Remain calm and relaxed, as pets can pick up on their owners’ anxiety.
Many pets benefit from medication for sedation during these events. Make sure to speak to your veterinarian about a possible prescription to help your pet through the holiday.
By following these steps, you can help your pet feel safer and more secure during the fire-work season. For more information about No Place Like Home please email info@noplacelikehome.vet or call/text 818-400-1986.
