Santa Clarita Symphony Orchestra Annual Youth Concerto Competition
Applications are now open for Santa Clarita Symphony Orchestra’s second annual youth concerto competition! Students in grades 9-12 in the Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding areas are eligible.
The competition was developed to inspire and encourage growth of young musicians. Students will be grouped into three categories based on instrument – winds/brass/percussion, strings, and piano. One winner from each category will be selected by a panel of judges to perform their concertos with SCSO at a concert in Spring 2026. Winners will also receive a plaque and a professional recording of their piece as performed in the concert.
Reflecting on last year’s inaugural competition, Dr. Brian Stone, Artistic Director, noted “there is a great deal of talent in our area here. It was very hard to choose winners, and the judges really had to split hairs to narrow it down.”
Ashley Turner, Executive Director, shares advice on how to prepare for the competition. “For all the talented students applying, this is your moment to shine. As you prepare, remember that while a strong technical foundation is essential, our judges are eager to hear your unique musical voice and the story you convey. Approach the audition with confidence, have fun, and let your connection to the music shape every phrase and detail.”
Live auditions are scheduled for November 15, 2025 at Santa Clarita United Methodist Church. Visit www.santaclaritasymphonyorchestra.org (click on “Special Events”) for the full list of requirements and to download the application. The application deadline is November 2.
