The Value of Performing Arts for All Ages – VIBE Performing Arts
Over the years, I’ve seen countless studies praising the benefits of the Performing Arts. One favorite is that students who sing or play an instrument often earn better grades and score higher on tests. Another: teens who participate in music, theater, or structured performance are less likely to experiment with drugs or get into trouble.
Those are wonderful reasons to support the arts, but in my own teaching and performing experience, I’ve found something even more important: the way the arts shape confidence, self-esteem, and resilience. With the right coaching – from instructors and parents – Performing Arts give young people tools that carry them through life’s challenges and victories alike.
What strikes me most is how often I hear people say, “I wish I could sing,” or “I’ve always wanted to perform,” followed by, “but I’m just not talented.” That hesitation is so common, and yet the truth is this: even the most talented performers face fears and limitations. No one is exempt from nerves or setbacks. The beauty of the arts is that you don’t need to be perfect – or even “good” by some external standard – to find joy in creative expression.
I’ve watched children step onto a stage for the very first time, voices trembling, only to beam with pride afterward. I’ve seen adults, who once labeled themselves as “untalented,” rediscover music or theater and come alive again. Those moments remind me that the arts aren’t just for the gifted few. They are for everyone.
The Performing Arts are not solely about technique. They are about expression, discovery, and the courage to share a piece of yourself with others. Whether it’s a young student learning piano, a teenager acting in a play, or an adult daring to sing at a community event, each experience brings growth, joy, and connection.
My hope is that everyone, at any age, is given the chance to step into that world – with respect, encouragement, and maybe just a little bit of bravery. The rewards go far beyond the stage.
The success of education depends upon cooperation between teacher, student and parent. VIBE Performing Arts endeavors to help all students experience excitement and dedication necessary to help them succeed in life as well as on stage.
