What Is Wrong with My Pond Fish?
When fish exhibit erratic swimming behavior—such as lifting their heads out of the water in what appears to be an attempt to jump, or flashing against the sides or bottom of the pond—it may indicate an underlying issue. These actions are not typical for Koi and could be signs of parasites, poor water quality, or spawning activity. Identifying and addressing the root cause is essential to ensure the health and well-being of the fish.
Water quality should be continuously monitored for the following parameters: temperature, pH, GH, KH, ammonia, copper, nitrite, nitrate, TDS, and dissolved oxygen. Test kits are available from pond supply vendors.
Identifying koi parasites is difficult and requires close observation, visually and / or aided by use of a microscope and skin scrapes which should be performed by an experienced pond service company or a fish veterinarian. Visual observation can identify small white dots, respiratory distress, gill damage, skin irritation, ulcers, mucus patches, and worm-like protrusions. Treatments are available from pond supply vendors.
Spawning activity occurs naturally and is characterized by pond water temperature in the 65-to-75-degree spring / summer range, foamy or cloudy water, female abdomens swelling with eggs, males jumping, flashing, chasing, and nudging the female to release eggs. If you observe these characteristics, monitor water quality and consider separating males and females if aggression becomes excessive.
