Thrifting Benefits The Environment – Assistance League Resale Store
Can donations to the Assistance League® Resale Store help to save the planet? It seems far-fetched until you consider some facts.
Many people worldwide are obsessed with the latest fashion trends, particularly disposable fast fashion clothing, contributing to a planet drowning in textile waste. Studies show that 85% of all textiles end up in landfills annually, amounting to approximately 10.5 million tons of waste per year. Thrift shopping helps to reduce the amount of clothing ending up in landfills. How good is thrifting for the environment? Buying and wearing second-hand clothing, rather than new, reduces carbon emissions by an average of 25% (City Thrift 2025).
By giving pre-owned items a second life, it extends their lifespan and reduces the demand for newly manufactured products. While the focus of this article is on clothing, thrifting includes furniture and other household goods. Thrifting has steadily gained popularity in recent years, allowing shoppers to find unique and affordable items such as retro and vintage items.
Assistance League Santa Clarita suggests that you donate your gently used clothing and household items to our Resale Store. Not only are you helping the environment, but your donations fund our philanthropic programs, enriching the lives of students and families living in our community. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, and your donation is tax deductible.
Two of our programs, Operation School Bell® and icare for kids, extend to all five Santa Clarita Valley school districts, encompassing 54 public schools and including more than 50,000 students. Your donation has the potential to increase a student’s self-esteem and confidence through the gift of new clothing, shoes or a pair of eyeglasses. Assistance League and its volunteers are committed to using all possible funds from the Resale Store to champion these community-based programs.
Are you convinced of the benefits of thrifting? Consider donating gently used items to Assistance League Resale Store located on 26045 Bouquet Canyon Road in Santa Clarita. Donations are accepted Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10:00 AM to Noon.
