Traveling with Pets – Copper Hill Animal Clinic
Many people travel with their pets for the holidays. There are several things to consider when traveling with your best furry friend. The first thing to assess is whether your pet is comfortable with travel. Some pets may not handle travel well because of age or temperament. In these situations, a reliable pet-sitter is an excellent option. Several of the staff at Copper Hill Animal Clinic offer pet sitting services, but plan ahead because they book up fast!
If traveling with your pet makes sense, always be sure they have identification tags with current contact information. A collar and ID tags could mean the difference between life and death for a pet lost in a remote location. Even better, an implanted microchip can improve your chances of getting your pet back if it becomes lost and many microchip companies will allow you to change contact information when traveling.
If you are taking your pet across state or international borders, a health certificate may be required. The health certificate must be signed by an accredited veterinarian after examining your pet and determining that it is free of infectious diseases. International travel often requires USDA endorsement of the certificate.
Make sure that your pet is allowed where you are staying. Some accommodations will allow pets and some will not, so check in advance. Also, when traveling, you should bring a portable kennel with you to keep your pet restrained.
Other useful items to bring include travel bowls with your pet’s food. Don’t forget any medications they may need, because it can be difficult to have medications filled when you are out of town. Security items like a familiar bed or toy can ease anxiety. If you know your pet is prone to motion sickness, ask your vet for medication to prevent nausea. Safe travels!
