Backyard Pond Winter Feeding Rules For Koi Fish – Santa Clarita Koi Club
Koi metabolisms will slow down at 50° Fahrenheit, causing them to become lethargic and less interested in eating>>>No feeding is recommended and could be dangerous. It can take four days to go from their mouth to exit while sitting in their stomach that whole time.
Remember, it’s the pond water temperature not your outside temperature to check if a feeding needs to happen. The water temperature day and night needs to be consistently above 50° Fahrenheit for a few days. Checking your pond water in the morning, before the sun hits your pond is the best time to check the pond temperature. At night your pond temperatures drop and after sunrise, it begins to rise. Testing your pond in the afternoon is only going to tell you the ponds afternoon temperature.
This brings up our next question about temperature of 50° Fahrenheit and below.
Why are my fish not eating? Are they sick? But my fish were eating a week ago. My fish are sitting on the bottom all in a straight line all day long. Is there some kind of construction next-door making noise? Or maybe you changed the food and they don’t like it. More than likely it’s because the cold winter 50° Fahrenheit months your fish are not eating . Of course, don’t ever rule everything else out.
