Healthy New Year’s Resolutions – American Cancer Society
January is a month of renewal and fresh starts. The new year is a time to consider what is meaningful in our lives and what kinds of commitments we want to make. If one of your resolutions is to get involved with your community through volunteering, the American Cancer Society’s Santa Clarita Valley Chapter invites you to join in helping to achieve our collective mission to ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.
There are many opportunities to take leadership roles with ACS. Volunteers can work in the local ACS Discovery Shop, provide transportation to help cancer patients get to treatment, or sign up for Relay For Life to lead a team, volunteer at the event, and raise funds! Making this commitment helps to promote awareness about cancer, fund research to find a cure, and support those going through cancer treatment. Learn about more ways to get involved at www.cancer.org/volunteer.
This year the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life will be held on May 2nd. Participating in Relay is a rewarding way to get involved. It’s not too early to join a team, create a team, or make a donation. Plan to walk with the Relay community in the #RelayFirstLap on Saturday, January 10, to kick off the 2026 Relay For Life season. Visit www.SCVRelay.org to register, donate, or review a calendar of upcoming fundraisers and events.
In addition to volunteering with ACS, all of us can help to end cancer as we know it by getting screened. January has been designated as Cervical Health Awareness Month. If detected early, cervical cancer is one of the most successfully treatable cancers.
The American Cancer Society recommends that women and other individuals with a cervix at average risk for cervical cancer should start screening at age 25 and continue until at least age 65. Screening should be done every 3 to 5 years, depending on the test. HPV infection has no treatment, but vaccination can prevent more than 90% of HPV cancers when given to girls and boys between the ages of 9 and 12. To learn more or find a screening location near you, visit cancer.org/getscreened or cancer.org/hpv.
Stay active and get involved in the new year!
