Stained, Discolored and Darker Teeth? – Kimberly Rosen DDS
There are many factors that affect why our teeth changes in color overtime. As we age, the outer layer of enamel on your teeth gets worn away exposing the dentin which is yellow in color. What we eat is also important. Consuming Coffee, tea, sodas, some starchy foods such as potatoes and pastas can create staining. You can rinse out with water and brushing right after consuming these can help cut down on discoloration.
It has also been proven that certain medications, medical treatments like chemotherapy, taking some antibiotics during pregnancy, antihistamines, antipsychotic drugs, and hypertensive medications can stain teeth.
Another reason is smoking, it causes your teeth to change in color because of the black tar build up. Poor oral hygiene and skipping professional dental cleanings can also be attributed for stains and plaque build up to start.
During sports, kids can get hit in the mouth. If they are younger than 8, the damage can disturb enamel formation creating trauma to the underlying teeth. It affects the blood flow causing the nerve to die.
Some dental materials like amalgam or most known as silver fillings can give a gray-black cast/shadow to your teeth.
Environment plays a vital role in the color of teeth. During formation, too much or too little fluoride can cause fluorosis or white spots on your teeth.
But don’t despair, there are ways to get your teeth whiter and brighter!
By consulting with your trusted dentist, these can be resolve by frequent visit to get a professional cleaning, professional whitening whether at home or in office whitening will help you enjoy a brighter smile.
