Hypothyroidism in Dogs – Copper Hill Animal Clinic
Hypothyroidism is the most common metabolic disease seen in dogs. It is a disease process which results from decreased thyroid hormone production by the thyroid glands. It is most common in middle aged to senior dogs, but can occasionally occur in younger dogs. Some clinical signs of the disease include increased fatigue, or “slowing down”and inclination towards gaining weight. Changes in the texture of the haircoat and skin including dull, dry, sparse hair and thickening and darkening of the skin. Dogs can also show changes in mobility, and be more prone to skin infections and internal health problems.
Getting a diagnosis can be straight forward, and is usually achieved through a simple blood test evaluating total t4, free t4, or thyroid stimulating hormone. Occasionally diagnosis can be more difficult if a dog has more than one problem or if their results are borderline, so sometimes repeated testing is needed.
Treatment is generally straightforward and economical. An oral thyroid hormone supplementation is widely available, and response to treatment is often satisfyingly rapid. Dosing of the hormone is based on weight, but sometimes achieving the correct dose may take some time. Some dogs are more sensitive to the supplementation, and checking the thyroid values after starting the hormone is important.
Treatment for hypothyroidism is lifelong because there is no cure for the disease, only treatment. Blood tests to monitor the hormone levels will usually be required at least once a year to ensure the dosing has continued at the optimal levels. If you think your dog may be suffering from hypothyroidism, feel free to reach out and we will be happy to help you!
