Winter Tips – No Place Like Home
Even here in Southern California, winter brings colder temperatures and cozy moments, but it also comes with added risks for our dogs and cats. Taking a few extra precautions during the colder months can help keep your pets safe, healthy, and comfortable.
Cold weather can be especially hard on pets such as seniors, short-haired breeds, and small animals. It’s important to limit time outdoors during extreme temperatures, provide warm and draft-free sleeping areas, and avoid unsafe heating sources like space heaters or heating pads. Pets should never be left unattended in cold cars, as temperatures can drop quickly and become dangerous.
Pets may also drink less water in winter, even though indoor heating can lead to dehydration. Make sure fresh water is always available and encourage hydration whenever possible. Inside the home, be mindful of seasonal hazards such as electrical cords, candles, and toxic plants.
Cats—especially senior cats—may become more selective about their litter boxes during colder months. Extra care should be taken to keep litter boxes clean and easily accessible, as some cats avoid cold floors or drafty areas.
Finally, winter often means reduced activity, which can lead to boredom and behavior issues. Mental stimulation through toys, training, and enrichment is just as important as physical exercise. Winter is also a good time to check collars, ID tags, and microchip information in case a pet becomes lost.
With a little extra care and attention, winter can be a safe and enjoyable season for everyone. Thank you for helping keep your pets protected. For more information about No Place Like Home please email info@noplacelikehome.vet or call/text 818-400-1986.
