Every Child a Swimmer by 3! – Academy Swim Club
Living in SoCal we can’t escape backyard pools. Even if you don’t have one, chances are good that a neighbor, friend or relative does. The motto of Academy Swim Club has always been “Learn to swim . . . for life!” Now we’re adding another – “Every child a swimmer by 3!” A motto and a mission.
Several summers ago, July was a particularly difficult month. Every weekend brought news of another child drowning in Santa Clarita. Our whole community was devastated. Naturally, all of us at Academy Swim Club were shocked and saddened, but in the end we were motivated to do something. In the years since that tragic summer, we have offered free CPR classes to the public, dispatched our staff and swimmers to local schools to educate young children about water safety, partnered with the City of Santa Clarita to sponsor an annual Water Safety Day, and hosted the World’s Largest Swim Lesson, to spread the word that swimming lessons save lives. We never want to see another summer of needless drowning deaths.
Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children under 5. Many parents do not think of signing their child up for swim lessons until they are almost 5, so this is hardly surprising. Water is everywhere – pools, fountains, toilets, buckets – and kids love the stuff. However, drowning is preventable. Place barriers around pools, learn CPR and start swim lessons early! Nothing replaces supervision (even for excellent young swimmers), but learning to swim adds a vital layer of protection. With consistent lessons, infants and toddlers are capable of learning to swim. Our program stresses positive reinforcement and water safety to develop swimmers who not only love the water, but also respect it.
Summer should be about fireworks, camping trips, blockbusters and pool parties. So start swim lessons now to be ready by Summer, and align with our mission – “Every child a swimmer by 3!”
