Honors, Half-Centuries, And Historic Tours
The new year brought some good news to the SCV Historical Society; we have been selected as the Non-Profit of the Year by the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce! The Society has worked with the Chamber for many years in spreading the word about preservation and museum news and we are honored to receive this recognition!
In complimenting the honorees, SCV Chamber Board President Di Thompson said “Through vision, collaboration, and service, they (honorees) elevate our community and help ensure its continued success for generations to come.”
The Society is grateful to be recognized as the stewards of the valley’s history for the last 50 years. Our vision includes expanded museum services, new programming, re-introducing school tours, and preserving the nostalgia evoked by places like the Saugus Speedway.
You’re invited to the party!
Speaking of celebrating 50 years of history, the Society is throwing a gala celebration on March 7 at the Canyon Country Community Center, “SCVHS50: Live From Santa Clarita, It’s Saturday Night!” and the community is invited! It’s not your typical dinner-and-dancing gala, our writers have created a show that blends the best elements of “Saturday Night Live” with some hysterical looks back at our legendary past, musical guests, awards, and the opportunity for guests to make an investment in the next half-century of the Society.
Tickets are available at www.scvhs.org; individual seats are $175, tables of 10 are also available. Sponsorship information is featured on the website. Tickets are going fast! You don’t want to miss this.
It’s almost March! When is the St. Francis Dam Tour?
We know, we know, March 12 is approaching quickly and you don’t want to miss our fact- and fun-filled tour of the St. Francis Dam disaster site, which always sells out quickly and usually goes on sale in January.
Because of frequent cancellations due to weather in March, the Society has decided to postpone the tour until the early part of May when the weather should be better and before it gets too hot. The event will be structured as before, with presentations of historic dam facts and stories of survivors in a lecture setting, followed by a bus tour up to the ruins. That will be happening just like before, we are just setting a date in May (and waiting for a few details to confirm). We will announce the tour dates as soon as they are solid, in both our newsletter and in local media (like this magazine!)
Keep up with the Society by frequently visiting our website at www.scvhs.org!
