Predator Pond Birds – Santa Clarita Koi And Water Garden Club
Predatory birds, such as the Snowy Egret, Blue Herons, Osprey, Bald Eagle, Kingfisher, Hawks, Goshawh, American Kestrel, and the Barn Owl are all living in our beautiful Santa Clarita Valley ,including many others. Most if not all have excellent hearing and eyesight. All these birds have found a ready supply of food in our backyard Ponds.
These birds are also protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Law, U.S. code Section 16, Chapter 703. This law protects over 1000 migratory and insectivorous gamebirds including but not limited to Sea Gulls, Ducks, Geese, Songbirds, Birds of Prey, Shorebirds, and Wading Birds.
Ponds need to be deep, with sides straight up and down, and plants sufficient to baffle from a bird. Construction needs to include difficulty for the birds to approach the pond. Having a lattice structure above, can improve less viewing from above when the birds fly over.
Birds don’t land in a pond. They land and walk to the pond.
Using clear monofilament fishing line, back-and-forth across and around the edge of the pond space being irregular will definitely help keep predator birds away from your pond. You need to make it as difficult as possible for predator birds to eat at your pond.
Rumor has it, Santa Clarita has over 1000 Ponds being a very large community. Yours might be one of them.
