Seasonal Allergies – Copper Hill Animal Clinic

by | Mar 28, 2026 | Pet Services

Seasonal allergies are one of the most common skin disorders in dogs. Allergies are an inherited allergic reaction to allergens, including pollens, molds, and other irritants. Affected dogs also have certain areas of the body where they are more susceptible, perhaps where the skin is thin on the abdomen. Other areas like the folds between toes, which may be more predisposed to wetness or subtle abrasions are another common location. This can cause affected dogs to be intensely itchy and uncomfortable. The dog then scratches or licks those areas, which may create moisture or skin damage. The damaged, moist skin is consequently more susceptible to secondary bacterial and yeast infections.
Allergies can be worsened by other factors. Flea and tick prevention and managing a potential low thyroid level can help support the skin barrier and prevent infection and itching. Once these other contributors are under control, treatment options for the atopy can be explored.
It is important to understand that atopy is a chronic disease and our goal is to improve your pet’s quality of life and decrease the itch. It is a disease that is controlled, but it will never disappear. Dogs will likely have flare-ups from time to time, making it necessary to alter the treatment plan. Because atopy is so common and severe, there are many treatment options. Many of these treatments work better in combination to provide relief.
