The Art of Specification – Liz Ann Designs

by | Mar 24, 2026 | Home & Garden

One of the questions I am asked most often is what goes into specifying the materials, furnishings and finishes for a project. From the outside it may seem like designers simply choose what looks beautiful, but the reality is far more thoughtful and detailed. Every item selected for a client’s home must meet a long list of criteria before it ever becomes part of the final design.
Before making a final decision, I begin with the most practical considerations. Is the product within the client’s budget, and does the quality truly justify the cost? Is it available within the project timeline, and are the lead times reliable? I also evaluate the company behind the product. A reputable brand with consistent quality and dependable shipping can make a significant difference in the success of a project.
Next, I consider how the piece fits within the design vision. Does it support the overall concept for the space? Is the scale appropriate for the room, and does the finish complement the palette we have developed? Materials must work together seamlessly, so I always think about how a new selection will integrate with the other finishes and furnishings already planned.
Durability and lifestyle are equally important. A piece may be beautiful, but if it cannot withstand the realities of the client’s day-to-day life, it is not the right choice. I consider whether the material will show wear easily, whether it is easy to maintain and whether it can be repaired or replaced if necessary. I also look closely at the authenticity of the materials and the craftsmanship behind the product to ensure it will age well over time.
Samples play an important role in this process. Whenever possible, I review samples to confirm that the finish, texture and quality match expectations and will work within the environment where they will be installed.
Ultimately, every specification carries my professional reputation. Each year I specify a large volume of products, from sofas and lighting to architectural finishes across multiple projects. Because of that responsibility, I never select something simply because it looks good. Every choice must be intentional, appropriate for the space and truly right for my clients.
