The Hardy Mosquito Fish – Santa Clarita Koi Club
The Western Mosquito Fish, or Gambusia Affinis is a small livebearer native to the Southern and Eastern United States. They look a bit like a plain female guppy. Small, silvery, dull gray, and unassuming.
These fish are survivors, and they were named for their voracious appetite for mosquito larvae.
As a livebearer, you’ll get to witness the entire lifecycle, watching the tiny fry appear and grow. They can tolerate a wide range of temperatures up to 108° for short periods, less than perfect water quality, and even low oxygen levels. Very forgiving for beginners.
Mosquito Fish are not demanding at all and live one to three years in Ponds.
What eats mosquitoes? Frogs, toads, tadpoles, spiders, bats, birds, dragonflies and the trusted western Mosquito Fish. Mosquito Fish are the most productive Mosquito predator.
Females reach a maximum length of 2.8 inches and males a maximum length of 1.6 inches.
The name “Mosquito Fish” was given because the fish eats mosquito larvae, and has been used more than any other fishes for the biological control of mosquitoes. Mosquito Fish were introduced directly into ecosystems in many parts of the world as a biocontrol to lower mosquito populations.
Several counties in California including Los Angeles County distribute Mosquito Fish at no charge to homeowners with human made fish ponds.
