Pond Pumps – Santa Clarita Koi & Water Garden Club
This will be a quick understanding of having a submersible or external pump for your pond. Submersible pumps are underwater, whereas the external pump is out of the water. Submersible pumps are perfect for small ponds, offering quiet operation and easily installed. They circulate water, power filtration systems, and water features while remaining hidden underwater. External pump tend to be better for moving large volumes of water, power filtration, water features, including a high head height. The head height is a vertical distance between the water level in the pond and the highest point where the water needs to be pumped, such as a waterfall, fountain, or water feature. External pumps tend to be more complicated to set up.
You need either pump to give your pond circulation, filtration, and maybe a fountain for aeration. You also need to know how many gallons your pond is to be able to calculate your pump size.
My thought, when buying a submersible or external pump is to buy bigger than you think you need. You can always slow the water down.
There are a few manufacturers that make low amperage pond pumps. Also, bigger the pond bigger the pump. Many pumps are rebuildable with some lasting 30+ years.
