Summer Allergies in Dogs: Relief Is Possible No Place Like Home
June is one of the most common months I see dogs for itchy skin, red paws, ear infections, and constant licking. In Santa Clarita, seasonal allergies are especially common as grasses, weeds, and environmental allergens peak with warmer weather. While allergies can’t always be cured, they can absolutely be managed—and comfortably.
Canine allergies often show up through the skin rather than sneezing or watery eyes like in people. Dogs may chew their feet, rub their faces, develop recurrent ear infections, or experience hair loss and hot spots. Left untreated, chronic inflammation can lead to secondary infections that require more intensive treatment.
Two of the most effective and commonly used medications we discuss are Cytopoint and Apoquel. Apoquel is an oral medication that works quickly to reduce itch and inflammation. It’s often helpful for dogs needing daily control and can be adjusted based on symptom severity. Cytopoint, on the other hand, is an injectable therapy given every 4–8 weeks. It targets the itch pathway directly and is a great option for dogs who cannot tolerate oral medications or who need longer-lasting relief.
Choosing the right treatment depends on the individual dog, their medical history, and the severity of their symptoms. In many cases, allergy management also includes regular bathing, dietary evaluation, and addressing secondary infections.
If your dog seems unusually itchy this June, don’t assume it’s “just allergies” they have to live with. With today’s options, relief is not only possible—it’s expected. For more information about No Place Like Home please email info@noplacelikehome.vet or call/text 818-400-1986.
