Back-to-School Blues: Helping Pets Cope with Schedule Changes – No Place Like Home
As summer winds down and families shift back into school routines, our pets can feel the change just as much as we do. After months of constant companionship, longer days, and more activity at home, many pets—especially dogs and some cats—can experience signs of separation anxiety once the house quiets down.
Common signs include pacing, whining, excessive barking, destructive behavior, or accidents in the house. These behaviors aren’t just “acting out”—they’re your pet’s way of coping with stress and confusion.
To help ease this transition, start by gradually reintroducing a more structured routine. If possible, begin leaving your pet alone for short periods in the weeks leading up to the school year. Offer puzzle toys, treat-dispensing games, or safe chew items to keep them engaged during alone time.
Don’t make goodbyes dramatic—quick, calm exits and entrances help your pet feel secure. Consider leaving a radio or white noise machine on to create a comforting background sound. For pets with more significant anxiety, natural calming supplements or pheromone diffusers may help.
If your pet continues to struggle, speak with your veterinarian. Mobile house call visits can make it easier to assess your pet’s behavior in their home environment and tailor a plan that’s right for them.
With a little preparation and support, your pet can adjust smoothly to the back-to-school season—and greet you at the door with a wagging tail or a gentle purr. For more information about No Place Like Home please email info@noplacelikehome.vet or call/text 818-400-1986.
