Dentin Hypersensitivity – Kimberly A. Rosen, DDS
Dentin hypersensitivity is a common and painful condition that causes short, sharp pain for patients. It can arise when the dentin of the teeth becomes exposed to external stimuli like eating and drinking. Research shows that some sufferers do not perceive dentin hypersensitivity as a dental condition like cavities or gum disease. They often think of it as a lifestyle inconvenience.
In addition, some sensitivity sufferers are hesitant to try a sensitivity toothpaste as they do not understand the cause of the condition or how a medicated toothpaste works to ease the pain.
Dentin hypersensitivity arises when tubules found within dentin become exposed, most caused by gingival recession or enamel wear. Once exposed, these tubules may encounter stimuli such as hot, cold and sweet foods and drinks, which can induce the movement of fluid within the tubules. Such movement can trigger nerves in the pulp, which may induce a short, sharp pain. Dentin tubules become exposed by gingival recession, due to Periodontal diseases and an over-vigorous brushing technique.
Tooth wear processes expose dentin tubules through one or more of the following:
Erosion (chemical breakdown of enamel) – contributing factors include exogenous acids (dietary acids), endogenous acids (gastroesophageal reflux)
Abrasion (mechanical wear) – contributing factors include incorrect toothbrushing i.e. brushing too hard
Attrition (loss of tooth structure due to tooth-on-tooth contact) – contributing factors bruxism
Abfraction (physical wear) – contributing factors include tensile or sheer stress in the cement-enamel region.
A change in lifestyle can help with the symptoms of sensitivity. By avoiding aggressive toothbrushing, using a soft-bristled toothbrush and sensitivity toothpaste, twice daily and more importantly schedule regular dental appointments.
Maintaining good oral hygiene is important for patients with dentin hypersensitivity. For any questions or concerns, you may call the office of Kimberly A. Rosen, DDS @ (661)255-2545. Please visit our website: www.kimrosendds.com
