Is Fire Hardening For You? – ANCO Designs
All homes should have some degree of Fire Hardening. As building codes have improved over the last 50 years, your home still has room for improvement. Your homes weaknesses will show up during an El Niño winter. While you cannot stop the El Niño storms from coming, you can increase the odds in your favor by adding simple and proven solutions such as gutters and drain systems to reduce and prevent damage to your home. After the El Niño has passed, the aftermath of these wet winters will contribute to the wildfire season. Wet winters create fuel for fires. More fuel leads to more wildfires. If you live within 2 to 4 miles of brush areas you should consider fire hardening for your home.
There are several methods of fire hardening for residential homes. The best way to start is to modernize your attic vents and crawl spaces if you have them. Most wildfires ignite homes from high wind conditions blowing burning fire embers miles away. These fire embers enter your attic through the vent screens in your attic. Another method is to modernize your landscaping by creating safe zones every 5’, 15’ and 30’ away from your structure. You should also hire a landscape design professional that knows how to recommend the best and safest plant materials. Also, coatings for siding and stucco can reduce heat and fire from attacking your home. Installing tempered glass windows will also reduce fire penetration, and adding a fire sprinkler suppression will go along way in giving you the ultimate protection. Of course, do not forget the need for power available 24/7 which is provided with your automatic generator system. When the power is shut off, it is difficult to protect your home.
