Thanksgiving Fun With Your Pets (And Keeping Them Safe!) – No Place Like Home
Thanksgiving is all about gratitude, good food, and spending time with the ones we love—and for many of us, that includes our dogs and cats. While the day can be full of fun for them too, it also brings a little extra chaos, so a bit of planning goes a long way in keeping everyone happy and safe.
For dogs, starting the day with a long walk or some playtime can make a big difference. Burning off that extra energy helps them stay calm once the house fills up with guests and activity. You can also include them in the celebration with a few safe treats like plain cooked turkey (no seasoning, skin, or bones), a little pumpkin, or a favorite chew or puzzle toy to keep them occupied while you’re busy.
Cats, on the other hand, usually prefer a quieter approach to the holiday. Setting up a cozy, calm space where they can retreat—complete with their bed, food, and litter box—can help them feel secure. Adding a toy, scratcher, or access to a window can keep them entertained, but it’s best to let them come and go on their own terms if they want to avoid the crowd.
Of course, safety is the most important part of the day. Many traditional Thanksgiving foods aren’t pet-friendly, including turkey bones, onions, garlic, stuffing, rich or fatty foods, chocolate, and anything containing xylitol. If you do want to share a little, stick to small amounts of plain turkey or simple veggies like green beans or carrots.
It’s also important to watch the environment around your home. Keep pets out of the kitchen while cooking to avoid burns or accidents, be mindful of candles and decorations, and remind guests not to slip them food from the table. With doors opening and closing more than usual, keeping an eye on exits can help prevent any unexpected escapes.
With just a little preparation, Thanksgiving can be a relaxed, fun, and safe day for both you and your pets—and a perfect time to appreciate every member of your family, furry ones included.
