If you are one of the many family members caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease, it can be very rewarding, but at times also be very frustrating.  It is so important that you not only provide care for your loved one, but that you also take proper care and time for yourself.  You may come to a point where it may be necessary to reach out to others for support.  Family members, friends and neighbors may want to help.  Faith-based groups may also have services that can assist you.  You may also want to seek out a support group where you can meet others caring for their loved ones who are also suffering from memory impairment.
Even with the best intentions to care for your loved one at home, there may come a time when it is no longer possible.  This can be a most difficult and overwhelming time.  It is important to know that there are options available to you—from in-home care to moving your loved one into an assisted living that specializes in the special needs of memory care.
If you decide to move your loved one into an assisted living community, here are some suggestions on what you may want to look for.  When you first walk through the front door, is the environment warm and welcoming?  Are the residents participating in activities?  Does the community offer an engagement program that focuses on the physical, spiritual, mental and emotional health of the residents?
Arts and crafts, puzzles and games, exercise programs and spiritual services are just a few examples.  Do they have life stations which allow the residents to engage in activities from their past that gave them joy?  These are the things that will give your loved one quality of life each and every day.
Making the decision to use long-term care for your loved one is not an easy one.  Hopefully, this article can empower you to take that first and most difficult first step when the time comes.
