The line-up outside the hall at St. Clare Catholic Church starts early as the crowds gather in eager anticipation of another delectable fish fry dinner. 2010 marks the 32nd year that St. Clare Catholic Church in Canyon Country has sponsored a series of fish fry dinners on the six Fridays of Lent, beginning February 19th and continuing through March 26th. These dinners benefit families in need and various local charities. It is no small task to serve as many as 1,000 or more dinners from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. each Friday night. About 200 volunteers start early and work late to set the stage for this event, cook, serve and clean up afterwards.
It is no wonder that these fish fry dinners have earned the reputation they have. The menu of beer battered Alaskan Cod, rice pilaf or French fries, coleslaw, rolls and butter along with coffee, tea or milk is available for $8.50 for adults, $7.50 for children and seniors. Beer, wine and soft drinks are available at an additional cost.
The dessert table is a popular stop to select a favorite treat for after dinner or to take home. Among the groups that take turns sponsoring the dessert table are the Wives of the Knights of Columbus, Cub and Boy Scouts, Young Adults, RCIA and Spanish Ministries.
Come join the satisfied diners at one or more of the upcoming Friday Fish Fries, February 19 through March 26. St. Clare’s is located at 19606 Calla Way in Canyon Country. For easy directions, turn off Soledad onto Camp Plenty, taking the first left turn onto Calla Way. The church is on the left. Follow the hungry crowds to the hall for a dinner of fine fish and fellowship you won’t soon forget. If you can’t stay, pick up a dinner to go!
