We have all heard the saying, “Use it or lose it” when it comes to exercise programs.  It couldn’t be truer!  Regular physical activity can help the human body maintain, repair, and improve itself.  Anyone, regardless of his or her age, can benefit from an exercise program.  In fact, most seniors – even those with illnesses or disabilities – can take part in some form of an exercise program!  People who exercise regularly will benefit in many ways:
• Exercise strengthens your heart and lungs and improves your cardiovascular system
• Exercise can lower your blood pressure
• Exercise can strengthen your bones, and slow the process of osteoporosis
• Exercise can keep joints, tendons, and ligaments more flexible, allowing for better ease of movement
• Exercise can help you maintain or lose weight
• Exercise contributes to sleeping better
• Exercise contributes to an improved sense of well-being and self-confidence
It is important to choose an activity that you like.  Walking, swimming, aerobics, golf, bicycling, dancing, yoga and weight training are all examples of exercise programs.  Decide whether you want to exercise alone, with a friend, or in a group.  Most communities have senior centers or parks and recreations that offer exercise classes.  If you live in, or are planning to live in an independent or assisted living community, it is essential that they offer a variety of exercise programs for their residents.  Having a physical therapist available for assessments is also very valuable.
Remember, before you begin an exercise program, you should always check with your physician first.  Your doctor can evaluate your physical condition, help you decide which activity will be best for you, and monitor your progress as you get your program underway.  Always pay attention to what your body is telling you, and if you feel discomfort, you are doing too much.  Do not follow the saying “No pain, no gain!”
It is never too late to start an exercise program, and the benefits will last a lifetime!
