If I told you what sacrifices I make for my single readers, you’d want to erect a statue in my honor.
Case in point: This last month I attended a new singles’ event here in the Santa Clarita Valley. It was a selfless act. I did it for you. There were no expectations, or even the slightest hope that I would finally and fortuitously meet the man of my dreams, my perfect match. Nope. I gave up a perfectly decent evening, dragging my poor friend, Safiya, along with me to check out the new singles’ gathering geared for the over 45 crowd.
We had heard that there was music in the lobby of the Hilton! One Friday night, two very nice gentlemen who had sent out flyers, set up their sound system, and invited singles to come listen! Safiya somehow always gets wind of these things. If it weren’t for her, I’d probably have a few dozen cats.
The promise was that they’d play classic rock every Friday and Sinatra-ish stuff on Saturdays. We got there early to secure a table. It started promptly at 7 p.m. We sat, ordered our drinks, and waited. The leader of the two-man band came over to speak with us. Turns out, he’s an actor who can sing. We were so excited about the prospect of a new singles’ event in town that we kept moving to different tables to ensure optimum visibility. By the time we hit our third table, the waitress was clearly confused.
The music was interesting at best. What appeared to be musicians playing real instruments, turned out to be guitar hero type drums, a real guitar, and karaoke screens instead of music stands. When they played an Eagles song I swear I heard Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit harmonizing in the background. If I had paid a cover charge, I’d have asked for my money back.
To make a long, sad story even more brutally pathetic, I’ll just tell you that, along with a group of four other single women, a lovely older couple, a hotel guest and his daughter, and a young married couple with their baby, Safiya and I were it. We bravely endured for two, solid hours but, the drummer was very nice to look at!
If you think you might like to try this with some friends, I have bad (?) news, they’re no longer there. Maybe it was because of the lack of advertising. Maybe it was the soft, blue glow of the karaoke screen on their faces, or it could have even been the venue. Whatever the reason, our Santa Clarita singles weren’t there. Honestly, even with badly done good music, it might have worked. I didn’t have an awful time. Imagine how much better it would have been with other people!! We need a place to find each other because, as I’m reminded daily, there are a lot of us searching!
