With spring upon us, gardening can be a healthy, stimulating physical activity that
can be enjoyed by seniors.
Seniors can get particular benefit because gardening:
• Is an enjoyable form of exercise.
• Encourages use of all motor skills, walking reaching and bending – through
activities of planting seeds and taking cuttings.
• Improves endurance and strength.
• Can help prevent diseases like osteoporosis.
• Reduces stress levels and provides relaxation.
• Improves well being as a result of social interaction.
• Provides nutritious, homegrown produce.
Some medical conditions and physical disabilities may restrict or prevent older people from participating in gardening, however, with planning and a few changes, you can create a safe, accessible and pleasant space.
Garden spaces, tools and equipment can be modified or adapted to help reduce
the physical stress associated with gardening.  Some suggestions include:
• Raising beds to enable people with physical restrictions to avoid bending and
stooping.
• Provide wheelbarrows and containers on castors to make suitable moveable and
elevated garden beds.
• Use lightweight tools that are easier to handle.
• Have stable chairs and tables to use for comfortable gardening.
• Ensure that there is a tap nearby or consider installing a drip feeder system for
easy watering.
For safety in the garden, always ensure that paths and walkways are flat and
non-slip.
Remember to warm up before gardening and encourage frequent breaks.  And be sure to protect from sun exposure by working in the garden early in the morning or late in the day, and wear a hat and apply sunscreen.
An edible garden is a garden that contains flowers, herbs, seeds, berries and other plants you can eat.  You can also consider using sensory plants that have a special smell, taste, touch and sight qualities.
There are many activities associated with cultivating an edible garden that seniors may enjoy, such as digging, planting, watering, harvesting food and flowers, participating in crafts and hobbies associated with plants and food preparation.
So, take time to enjoy the beauty of gardening, a fun, stimulating activity that can
be enjoyed by all, especially seniors.
