Most people know Tai Chi as a series of flowing movements and breathing exercises that increase flexibility and mobility while decreasing stress. Yet one of the lesser known yet proven benefits of Tai Chi is weight loss.
It is estimated that over two-thirds of Americans are overweight, and one-third of those are “obese.” Both designations are marked by notable and sometimes severe health risks. According to the National Institute of Health, overweight and obese individuals are more likely to suffer diabetes, stroke, heart disease, reproductive problems, and osteoarthritis.
Tai Chi offers a gentle yet certain answer to our American struggle with weight. Because it is a low-impact series of movements, it’s a good choice for people carrying extra weight, since being overweight is often accompanied by hip and knee problems. The slow movement, generally described as a set of flowing postures similar to a fluid dance, is made up of gradually shifting the body weight alternately from one leg to the other, keeping the body in constant motion. As the body weight is shifted onto one leg, the weight bearing exercise builds muscle mass and boosts metabolism. As a cardiovascular exercise, it burns as many calories in an hour as low impact aerobics or even noncompetitive downhill skiing. It may surprise you, but it’s true.
Tai Chi also provides an even greater benefit—it reduces stress and positively stimulates the digestive system. When we are stressed, our bodies produce cortisol, a hormone which affects blood sugar and energy production. Too much cortisol in the system triggers weight gain, especially around the abdomen. Tai Chi brings the body back into balance by reducing stress through measured breathing and focused movement. This practice lowers unhealthy cortisol levels and re-energizes the digestive system. The result is a healthier and more peaceful life.
