Pregnancy is an exciting time for couples. With the expectation of a child, there are many mental and physical changes that occur. Simple activities of daily living can become a concern due to untoward effects they may have on the fetus.
Some of these areas of concern will be discussed.
Weight gain is a normal expectation for a pregnant woman. However, the advice to eat for two is not true at all. Neither is the belief that if the mom is hungry, the baby is hungry. A normal pregnancy will cause a woman to gain an extra 25 to 30 pounds due to the placenta, increase in blood volume, amniotic fluid, fetal weight and the ever-famous food cravings. It is best to follow a healthy diet high in fiber, rich in fruits and vegetables and consisting of good low-fat protein choices. Five small meals a day is recommended over the usual larger three meals a day.
Exercise is highly advised in order to get mom ready for labor. Studies have shown that pregnancies have fewer incidences of annoying symptoms and babies are born healthier if the mom exercises routinely during her pregnancy. Walking, stretching, swimming, stationary bicycling and prenatal yoga are all wonderful choices for exercise.
Medications are sometimes required during pregnancy and many of them are safe to use. Certainly it is best to check with your health care provider before taking any over-the-counter medications. Jacuzzi, sauna and steam rooms are not advised due to an increase in body temperature that occurs in the mom while she is enjoying the hot environment. Artificial sweeteners and caffeine should be kept to a minimum. Smoking is strongly discouraged, as is drinking alcohol.
Certainly these are just a few of the questions a pregnant couple may have during the prenatal period.
