The Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center’s Adult Day Care and Resource Center (ADCRC) provides a safe and cheerful social outlet for adults with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, post-stroke, and other chronic conditions requiring supervision and care.
Staffed by its skilled, supportive team, the State of California-licensed day care also offers a precious bonus for caregivers, who are generally elderly spouses or busy adult children with families and careers: valuable weekday windows of time for tending to their own (frequently overlooked) needs. That’s a crucial benefit for reducing the physical and emotional stress levels associated with care-giving.
The Adult Day Care provides abundant socialization and cognitive stimulation. Activities include engaging word games and discussions, exercise, and field trips. Nutritious snacks, hot supervised lunches, holiday and client birthday parties, as well as live music and singing are also part of the daily enjoyment.
In addition, the Senior Center’s low-cost ADCRC provides resources that address the numerous issues related to the needs of dependent adults and caregivers through the widest spectrum of programs and services in the Santa Clarita Valley.
“Adult Day Care provides a life preserver to caregivers,” said ADCRC Supervisor, Gladys Ehrhardt. “It gives them a chance to do errands, get to an appointment, and unwind from the daily demands involved in being a caregiver,” Ehrhardt said. “Most important of all, social day care helps makes life more enjoyable for its clients.”
“You see these people interacting with others and how it really lifts them out of their conditions. It’s rewarding and touching at the same time,” Ehrhardt said.
Adult Day Care Transportation: Provided by Dial-A-Ride and/or Senior Center buses.
Days and Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with before and after-hours care available.
Cost: The program costs much less than you think, particularly when compared to other alternatives for care. The Senior Center’s Adult Day Care program is supported by the Los Angeles County Area on Aging and the Celebrity Waiter Fundraising Dinner. Fees are sliding scale and limited scholarships are available.
