Lauren Blaire never got the opportunity to attend college like her other Saugus High School peers. She was killed by a drunk driver while waiting at a red light at the intersection of Plum and Bouquet Canyon Roads.
In her memory, the Saugus Varsity softball team still plays a game and holds a raffle each year to maintain a scholarship fund in her name, nine years after her passing.
Each year, the senior softball players are invited to submit an essay about the ongoing problem of drinking and driving and the consequences. This year the Blaire family and Saugus Softball sponsored two scholarships of $1,000 each. A committee, headed by the Blaire Family, will select the outstanding entries.
Event organizers agree that it is a tragedy that such a memorial game should ever take place, however, they hope it will be a reminder that drinking and driving don’t mix and that Lauren’s spirit is alive on the Saugus softball fields.
If you or your business would like to make a donation please send it to The Lauren Blaire Scholarship Fund, c/o Saugus Softball Booster Club at 21900 W. Centurion Way, Saugus, 91350.
