No doubt that divorce is a very serious matter. Like many things in life, it is a process. Divorces can be horrible. But not every divorce has to be. Often I will counsel my clients that they need to make decisions in their divorce as they would in a business transaction. That is, they need to leave the hate and animosity out of the decision making process all together.
While vacationing in Colorado recently, I was told the story of someone who unfortunately never got over his divorce. He should be an example of what not to do for all of you.
First of all, for me at least, Colorado turned out to be one of, if not the prettiest States in our nation. Having said that, Colorado Springs had a bit too many “tourist traps” for me. One of the main attractions, and one well worth seeing, is The Cave of The Winds in Manitou Springs. I highly recommend the “Lantern Tour,” which is where I learned about the proprietor of the Cave, George Snider.
Before I get to the particulars, keep in mind that he was one of the pioneers of divorce, getting divorced in the 1800’s. In one of the deep rooms of the cave, Mr. Snider would have his visitors leave their business cards. On the walls of the cave, were places for all of the states of our nation except one, Texas. His ex wife was apparently from Texas.
He made it publicly known that any person from the State of Texas were not welcome in his Cave. If they wanted to leave a business card, there was a pit in the back of the cave for them. It goes without saying that it is one thing to hate an ex-spouse. Hating everyone that comes from the same state as your spouse is something else all together.
As I stated before, divorce is a process. For sure it can be a scary prospect. But if you speak to your friends that have gone through the process, while some of them like Mr. Snider may still be bitter, they all get through it. And I venture to say that the vast majority, are much happier now.
