With the best two-day in a row score of his life, West Ranch High School sophomore, Colin Wheeler was the winner of the 2-day Newhall Land Cup Golf boys event recently played at the Tournament Players Club.
“It was a lot of fun, but, I never thought I’d win,” said Wheeler before picking up the trophy for his winning score of 142, 71 on each of the days.
His coach, Jeffrey Holen said, “When I first met Collin last year at our tryouts what impressed me most about his game was his ability to putt. Collin is a golfer that knows his game and plays to his strength, putting. He is not afraid to take a risk/reward shot because he knows that he has the ability to get up and down by rolling a putt from anywhere on any green. As a Wildcat, I have seen this young man mature and grow as a golfer but more importantly I have seen him mature as a person. He has become one of my quiet teamleaders. As far as his potential as a golfer, with the right instruction, guidance and mindset, I feel Collin will be successful at higher levels of golf.
After 36 holes of play, Hart High School was the winning team with an average score of 754.
Each of the participating schools, including Valencia, West Ranch, Saugus, Canyon, Hart and Golden Valley received a $1000 cash contribution each towards their school. Newhall Land was the founding and title sponsor of the event. The girls high school teams will take to the greens in the fall.
