Have you ever seen lacquered walls?  They can be quite stunning.  This is a creative specialty finish that can be applied in a high-gloss or eggshell finish.
Lately we have been hired to paint many New York-style apartments in some of these exclusive Los Angeles high-rise buildings.  This style is what attracted my client to this building, which is very different from their prior home.  I always like to explore our clients’ reason for moving as well as their vision for their new surroundings.  Once we understand their vision, we like to expand on that for them.  They were acquiring a new library of artwork, so the walls needed to be interesting yet act as a backdrop for the diverse range of art.  The colors we picked are really kind of a neutral palette in many ways with a soft taupe grey in the living room and dining room areas, highlighted with fabrics and furnishings and the colorful art pieces.  We continued the soft taupe grey through the paneled walls in the hallway but only in the reveal of the paneling.  The larger surface of the paneling received a rich aubergine (eggplant) color.
There is a theme throughout this home of jewel tones in various saturations, topaz, garnet, peridot and aquamarine that bestow a rich yet natural feel.  These colors flow and relate to each other with contrasts of light against dark for impact.  All these beautiful colors are accented with a rough French wood flooring for a contrast of texture.  The higher paint sheen added depth that bounces the light as a gemstone does once it’s polished.
This project was recently photographed for Architectural Digest Magazine and was also featured this month in the Angeleno Designer Magazine.
