Many of us like to keep active outdoors.  For those who enjoy day hikes or the occasional trial ride on any of the great trails around Santa Clarita, or for that matter any trail, this article is for you.
Fortunately, most of us never have had any trouble during our outings; however, occasionally a hiker goes missing and even dies on what most would consider an easy day hike.  While there are many variables that can affect the outcome of your outing, this article will briefly address the gear that can improve your odds of survival or simply make your trip that much more enjoyable.  Sticking to a plan, and making friends and family aware of that plan, including when you will be expected back, is key.  But let’s get to the gear.
Carrying a small backpack such as our CamelBak hydration pack along with some essentials: such as a whistle (Storm), a small first aid kit (S.O.Tech), a poncho or light jacket (Propper, Condor), some power bars, and a small flashlight (UK), can really put you ahead of the game.  Dressing for the occasion is important but bringing some extras for the unpredictable is equally if not more important.  The typically warm weather can quickly turn chilly, so having a long sleeve nylon shirt and long pants from 5.11 Tactical will be appreciated when the “sun goes down.”  Sturdy and comfortable footwear from Bates or Danner worn with socks from Drymax will keep your feet tuned up and protected.  Learning how to use a compass is easy, and carrying one of our Cammenga Lensatic compass’s can get you going in the right direction.  A pair of gloves from Ringers, CamelBak, or Franklin, is an easy way to cut the cold and protect your hands.  Of course your gear is only going to work if you take care of it and know how to use it.
Oh, and if you take your dog with you, remember to pack a folding water bowl from S.O.Tech, some food, and enough water for you and your pup.
We work with the professionals so we carry an excellent range of quality products.  We are here for you, so if you want help with the right type of gear for your adventure, stop in today or call us at 661-257-1406 or visit us on the web at www.cobratactical.com.
