I have been an art collector since 1977, and collecting both art and guitars, motivated my wife and I to open up an art gallery in 1981. I have had so much personal enjoyment from the art and my instruments, including the playing of the guitars I collect, that I would not trade my profession for any other.
The main premise I base my art collection on is, does the work of art give me “goose bumps” or not? Does it stir up new emotions and feelings when I view the piece? A recent tour to the Gene Autry museum with a client from Washington State and my son reinforced that emotional response. We had toured the museum for about an hour-and-a-half. We had a time limit because my customer was going back to Washington State soon. In the last room we visited there was a magnificent painting by artist, Howard Terpning, The Force of Nature Humbles All Men. It was highlighted with excellent lighting and it gave me goose bumps all over my body when I viewed it.
The Terpning painting was also released three years ago as a limited edition on canvas and has increased in value by six times its original price. The point here is this: collect what touches you. Acquire art that stirs your emotions and elevates you as a being. My goal is to create a collection of art at B&R Gallery that the community can appreciate and will give them goose bumps whenever they view their special painting.
