Water Safety Isn’t Just for Summer – Academy Swim Club
While the days of pool parties and beach vacations may start to fade, the risk of drowning must remain a year-round concern. A startling statistic reveals that 70% of drownings occur outside of designated swim times, with clothes still on, emphasizing the importance of ongoing water safety practices.
We like to say: “As the summer season fades away, the water will still stay”. It’s easy to let our guard down when it comes to water safety in the colder months. However, bodies of water remain inviting to little children year-round. This is why it’s crucial to maintain vigilance throughout the year, and to always keep water safety top of mind.
A few effective ways to practice water safety is to follow The Safer 3:
Adding barriers to pools like safety fences, covers, and alarms can significantly reduce the risk of unsupervised access. These measures can be especially important for homes with young children or individuals with disabilities.
Learning CPR is another essential skill for anyone. Knowing how to perform CPR can be the difference between life and death in the event of a drowning. Seconds matter.
Continuing swim lessons is also highly recommended. Studies have shown that formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by up to 88%. By learning swimming techniques and water safety skills, individuals can increase their confidence and competence in the water.
Remember, water safety is a year-round responsibility. By taking proactive steps such as adding barriers, learning CPR, and continuing swim lessons, we can help prevent drownings and ensure the safety of our loved ones.
