The SCV Mayor’s Committee for Employment of Individuals with Disabilities, whose purpose is to encourage and promote the employment of persons with disabilities, recently held its Annual General Meeting and luncheon at the SCV Activities Center.  The Keynote Speaker – Sgt. Tony Lino, USMC, spoke on behalf of the veterans’ support organization Tempered Steel, whose goal is to share “the stories behind the scars, uniting wounded warriors with the public through dialogue”.
Sgt. Lino initially related his story of being wounded twice during several tours of duty in Iraq, and his subsequent struggles toward recovery.  His compelling journey of personal tragedy and triumph included both how he views himself, and how others see him.  He acknowledged the support he has received from others, especially his wife.  Sgt. Lino’s discourse kept attendees focused, and led to questions at the conclusion of his talk.
Attended by over 40 guests, the event began with the presentation of Colors by the Valencia High Junior ROTC.  Mayor Marsha McLean shared a few opening words about the importance of hiring those with disabilities and the wonderful contributions that they can make to our community.
The event concluded with remarks from current Mayor’s Committee Chairperson, Bob White, thanking the speakers and attendees, and reminding members that scholarships are available, and that the next event will be in October at the Employer Appreciation Luncheon.
