Now that the FDA has approved Silicone gel implants for most women, has the dust really settled on this subject?  Most of my patients that I see in consultation still have mixed feelings.  There have been too many years of controversy and junk science for there to be a consensus either way.

The new Gel implants are greatly improved, they are filled with a cohesive gel (gummy bear-like material) and the outer shell is made to last longer.  These new improvements will add to the life span of the prosthesis, while reducing the risk of hardening.  What do I recommend?  In general, I believe the two implants look the same but Silicone implants feel more natural.  I recommend the Silicone implant for women that have a small amount of there own natural breast tissue.  For women with fuller breasts and more tissue, they can go with either implant.  Overall, most women outside of the United States, choose Silicone implant over Saline implants.  I believe that over the next several years, we will see more American women choosing Silicone Gel implants because of their natural feel and improved safety.  I just returned a week ago from the Mentor Plant in Texas where I was able to see first hand just how well-made these implants are now.  I toured of the facility and was able to see each and every step taken to make such a great product.  Mentor offers a 10-year warranty program that stands behind their products.  That is why I feel they are the number one choice in implants.
