Running a small business (the mom and pops of our community) in a world of large chain stores is a tough endeavor.  Most importantly, it requires commitment… a huge commitment.  It requires long, hard hours.  So you have to believe in it more than anyone else.  You have to be truly passionate about what you do.  Passion is not something that can be taught, but it’s something you definitely need.  If you love what you do, that love will be seen in your product.  And sooner rather than later everyone will be catching onto that passion.
Find humor in your failures… nobody is perfect.  So don’t take yourself too seriously; loosen up.  If you loosen up, your employees will also.  It makes it a happy place to work.  Thank your staff often for doing a great job and work with them on those areas needing improvement.  Being supportive will inspire your employees to do better.  Your attitude toward your employees will also be reflected in how they treat customers.  Although they are obviously trained how to do the job, you being supportive to your employees will result in great customer service, which is an integral part of their job.  Employees must know that customers are a business’ most vital asset, without them we won’t succeed.
You never have a second chance to make a good first impression, so you must get it right the first time around.  Exceed our customers’ expectations.  If you do, they’ll come back again and again.  It’s important to let your customers know you appreciate them.  Greet them as they walk through the door, be helpful, and give them the best service possible.  Thank them for coming in, and tell them you appreciate their business. Excellence is what differentiates a quality business from the ordinary.  This is truly what quality is all about, and it will set you apart from the competition.
Think of your business as being number one, and it will be.
