America’s Growing National Debt: Why It Matters to Every Taxpayer – Professional Tax Services
The U.S. national debt has grown to nearly $40 trillion—a figure so large it is difficult to comprehend. Simply put, the national debt is the total amount the federal government has borrowed over many decades because government spending has exceeded tax collections and other revenues.
When the federal government spends more than it receives in a given year, it runs a budget deficit. To finance that deficit, the U.S. Treasury issues bonds that are purchased by investors, banks, pension funds, foreign governments, and individuals. Although the government is not expected to repay the entire debt, it must make interest payments on that debt every year. Those payments are funded through federal revenues collected from taxpayers.
The national debt has accumulated under administrations and Congresses of both political parties. Regardless of which party is in power, continued deficit spending increases the amount the government must borrow and the interest it must pay.
Events such as natural disasters, economic downturns, or military conflicts can also contribute to higher federal spending. When additional borrowing becomes necessary, the national debt grows larger, and may also affect the economy via higher energy prices, transportation costs, and prices consumers pay for many goods and services. This may also increase the cost of mortgages, auto loans, credit cards, and business financing.
Perhaps the greatest long-term concern is not whether the United States can meet its obligations, but that an increasing share of federal tax revenue must be devoted to paying interest on the debt rather than funding infrastructure, education, public safety, national defense, or tax relief.
Ultimately, we as taxpayers bear the cost of government borrowing through a combination of higher taxes, reduced government services, additional borrowing, or slower economic growth. Future generations may also inherit a greater financial burden if deficits continue to expand.
The national debt influences interest rates, inflation, taxes, and the nation’s long-term economic flexibility. Regardless of political affiliation, understanding how federal borrowing affects taxpayers is an important part of making informed financial decisions.
