Get Your Gutters and Drains Ready for the Rainy Season – Gerry De La Rosa
As the holidays approach and Southern California prepares for the rainy season, now is the time to make sure your home is ready for whatever Mother Nature brings. With the possibility of El Niño conditions and heavier rainfall, one important area homeowners often overlook is their gutter and drainage system.
Gutters serve an important purpose. They collect rainwater from your roof and direct it through downspouts and, in many homes, into connected drainage systems that carry water safely away from the property. When gutters become clogged with leaves, dirt, roof debris and other buildup, that water may have nowhere to go.
The result can be overflowing gutters, backed-up drains, standing water and unnecessary water exposure around your home. Waiting until a major storm arrives to discover a blockage can turn a simple maintenance issue into a much bigger headache.
Even homes with gutter guards, screens or roof covers still need regular cleaning. While these products can help prevent larger leaves and debris from entering the gutter, they cannot completely stop dirt, dust, small particles and organic material from accumulating. Over time, that buildup can restrict water flow and contribute to clogged downspouts and drains.
It is also important to look beyond the gutters themselves. Because gutters may connect directly to underground or exterior drainage systems, the entire path should be checked and cleared. A clean gutter will not do much good if the downspout or drain it feeds into is blocked.
Fall is the perfect time to take care of this maintenance. Getting your gutters and drains cleaned before the heavier rains arrive can help protect your roofline, exterior walls, landscaping and areas around your home from unnecessary water buildup.
It also makes sense to get the job done before the holiday season is in full swing. Once decorations go up and family gatherings begin, the last thing you want to worry about is climbing onto the roof or dealing with clogged gutters during a rainstorm.
A little preventative maintenance today can help keep your home ready for the rainy months ahead.
