As graduate students we are provided many experiences showing us the right and wrong ways people should support children and families.  In our first five weeks as interns at Inner Circle Foster Care & Adoptive Services we have seen children not only have the opportunity for a second chance, but we have seen whole families blossom as a result of the services and the warmth provided by Inner Circle.  Inner Circle chooses to remain relatively small compared to other Los Angeles FFA’s to uphold its quality over quantity ideology.  As a result we have been able to witness and observe the meaningful connections these children make with their caregivers in just the short time we have been here.
Inner Circle believes in providing not just a social worker but an entire support system to aspiring foster caregivers, recently detained children, and the birth families.  In addition to the standard trainings families receive, Inner Circle also offers a variety of communal activities for the foster families in order to further establish the bond within and between Inner Circle’s community.  These activities include a weekly art class with the director Pam Jordan, a Halloween costume contest, annual golf tournaments, holiday parties, and other family events such as picnics and outings.
However, working here is not without its difficult moments.  Often times we are faced with challenges that can be draining.  As a small agency it is impossible to take in every child that needs a home.  This is why we are in need of more people like our current foster parents—caring, strong, compassionate people.  It’s really gratifying to know that when a child is placed in an Inner Circle home that they are in good hands.
