ImageMothers have a day.  Fathers have a day.  Even groundhogs have a day.  Shouldn’t kids have their own day too?  Well, now they do.

The Santa Clarita Valley Boys and Girls Club in partnership with the City of Santa Clarita and over 50 local organizations are proud to present the 2nd annual Day for Kids in Santa Clarita.  The free event will be held on September 15, 2007 from noon to 5 p.m. at Newhall Park.

The Day for Kids Celebration will include carnival rides, food, entertainment, games, crafts and a raffle.  The best part about the event is that everything is free, including the food.  Raffle prizes will include bikes, laptop computers, televisions, video games and other prizes donated by participating organizations.

Day for Kids is celebrated all across the nation on the 3rd Saturday in September.  The event is organized on a national level through the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and other non-profit organizations.

The mission of the national event is to promote meaningful time spent between children and adults.

Research shows that when adults spend meaningful time with kids, it helps kids develop a positive self-image and a sense of belonging, usefulness and purpose.  The Families and Work Institute’s study, Ask the Children, found that while children are happy with the amount of time their parents spend with them, they wish the time together was not rushed, but focused and rich in shared activities.

Each year Americans have cars inspected, change the batteries in smoke alarms and check furnaces before the cold weather.  These actions are routine.  Things that we never forget to do.  Yet, when it comes to our most important responsibility, our children, we sometimes forget to take stock of how we’re doing as parents, caregivers and mentors.  BGC Day for Kids, with its meaningful time message, aims to change that.

Santa Clarita’s first Day for Kids celebration in 2006 was a major success with over 5,000 people in attendance.  This year, the event is sure to be another big success.
So mark your calendar for Day for Kids in Santa Clarita and take the Day for Kids pledge….”We pledge to spend meaningful time together, to talk, to listen, to learn and to play, to share a moment, create a memory and make a kid’s day. “
