As the holiday season is upon us, it is important to take time to celebrate with family and friends, reflect on the past, and talk about the future. However, this can also be a difficult time for the elderly. During the holidays, an older adult may feel more secluded as they deal with the passing of time, absence of family and friends, and perhaps the distance of loved ones.
Avoiding depression with the elderly during the holidays may be as uncomplicated as making sure they feel needed and included in activities. For example, enlist their assistance with holiday traditions, but most importantly, acknowledge the loss of loved ones during gatherings with a celebration in honor of their name; a visit to the cemetery; or simply spending quality time talking about people who are no longer with us.
For some elderly, taking residency in a senior retirement community could be the answer to loneliness and depression. Residents have similar stories, experiences, and understand dealing with the loss of a loved one. Many come together at the holidays and participate in spirituality, enrichment programs, uplifting activities, community celebrations, and exciting excursions.
The Holiday Season does not have to be a time of depression for the elderly. With the support of family and/or friends, a loved one could be having a pleasant experience residing in a senior retirement community and rejoicing with new found friends.
